The reconvened McHenry County Libertarian Party has a new chairman in David Brady.
The party elected Brady, who moved to Wonder Lake from Philadelphia about 2 years ago, at its foundation meeting Thursday evening in Woodstock. Brady said the local party's goal was not to be a foil to local Democrats and Republicans, which he said doomed a brief attempt in 2004 to create a county Libertarian Party.
"Our goal isn't to be the thorn in the side of McHenry County," Brady said. "It's to get people thinking in the Libertarian mindset that we don't have to be so dependent on government."
The party has 22 active members. It does not plan to field local write-in candidates in November, but rather prepare to be a force in the 2010 election.
David Brady and his wife, Francine, were involved in the Libertarian Party of Pennsylvania and decided to resurrect it here when they moved. The party elected her as vice-chair.
The national party nominated candidates Bob Barr and Wayne Root for president and vice president at its convention, and it is fielding Illinois candidates for U.S. Senate and the 14th Congressional District.
